HockeyThe Pain of Separation

Hocky is a high speed contact sport and with conact comes injury.  One of the most common injuries our physical therapists see in hockey players is a sholder separation caused by player being checked into arena boards, player collison, or a fall to the ice.

If you're not planning to hang up your skates in
fear of injury, you should know how to identify
shoulder injury and what to expect if it happens to
you.

Shoulder Injury Symptoms
Players with pain localized to the top of the
shoulder should check for a visible dip in the top
of their shoulder.  Move the arm across the chest at
shoulder level, then behind as if reaching
backwards. If these tests result in pain, it is
likely that a joint sprain or separation has
occurred.

For first aid treatment, immediately support the
injured arm in a sling for transport. Apply ice for
15 minutes to help reduce pain and swelling.  Most
importantly, see a doctor for evaluation as soon as
possible.

Recovery
Once your doctor has ruled out fractures and the
severity of the injury has been identified, initial
rehabilitation may include a period of
immobilization.  Subsequently, your Nose Creek
physical therapist will apply methods such as
Ultrasound, Laser or Interferential Current to
assist the healing. We'll continue with guidance
through a series of range of motion and strengthening
exercises to speed recovery time
Winter
Nutrition Tips for Winter

Just as it is important to stay cool and hydrated in the summer, it is equally important to stay dry and hydrated when the weather turns cold. Without the same amounts of intense sweat and heat, many coaches and parents don't realize that their players can suffer from dehydration during the cold weather months just as easily as during summer.

By way of response, a drop in body temperature stimulates the appetite and we naturally experience hunger. Thirty to sixty minutes after eating, the body generates about 10% more heat than with an empty stomach. Food's overall warming effect is known as thermogenesis. Hence, when chilled during winter exercise we tend to reach for food.

Ideas for nourishment at half time to warm our players and keep them hydrated should include heated mulled cider with warm oatmeal, steaming broth or soup. The warm food added to the thermogenic effect of eating contributes to rapid warmth and recovery. Although this should not replace water, the high liquid choice will also assist with hydration.
