Nose Creek Physical Therapists Provide Information on Workstation Chair Adjustment

There are a number of reasons why our physical therapists recommend that you should adjust your chair:

• Seating that doesn’t adequately support your back increases fatigue and contributes to poor posture.

• Seating that is too high can result in awkward neck postures or pressure on the back of the thighs.

• Seating that is too low may require you to use awkward arm postures to reach up to the work surface or may cause you to sit with your knees raised, increasing the stress on your lower back.

• Sitting for long periods without varying your posture decreases circulation.

Any posture that you hold for a long time- whether you are sitting or standing—will result in fatigue and discomfort. Physiotherapists warn that when you begin to feel discomfort, you’ve held a position too long. Avoid fatigue and discomfort by varying your posture regularly throughout the work day. You can do this by adjusting your chair and by standing or walking occasionally. Your chair controls should be simple to use so that it’s easy for you to adjust your chair -- while seated -- regularly during the work day.
